CLUB HISTORY

Our Club was chartered in 1968 as the San Diego Board of Realtors Toastmaster Club. The Club later changed its name to Eighteen-O-Eight when the San Diego Board of Realtors reclaimed their name. Initial club membership was comprised primarily of people in real estate, development, and related businesses.  Today, however, Club membership represents a very wide range of professions and interests.

Our  Club has more than 30 members. Over the years the Club has won many ribbons for its achievements within Toastmasters. Our ribbon-festooned banner still retains the original name of the Club, tastefully covered over with duct tape.  As a result, some of us refer to ourselves as the Duct Tape Toastmasters, but only in fun.

Over the years, Eighteen-O-Eight has held its meetings at several locations throughout the San Diego region.  The first meeting place was the Chuckwagon Restaurant on Pacific Highway.  Subsequently, the Club met at the Hanelei Hotel (now the Red Lion) in Mission Valley, the Mission Valley Quality Resort and the Kings Inn in Mission Valley.  Following a period of zoom meetings, we now have live meetings at Denny's on Camino del Rio South in Mission Valley, San Diego, CA .  We also have a zoom connection to allow members to attend remotely when necessary.

THE HARRY LEE SMITH (HLS) AWARD

This award is unique to 1808. It is named in honor of our founder, Harry Lee Smith and is presented at the Installation Dinner.  The HLS award goes to that member who has accumulated the most points during the award period, based on participation and performance in Club and Toastmaster International activities, and on recruiting new members.
